It’s important to maintain a healthy and safe home in order to prevent illness and accidents. To do this, we must keep the home clean and dry, free of pests, well-ventilated, free from contaminants, safe and well-maintained.

This involves paying attention to all areas of the home, including:

  • Basement and crawlspace
  • Interior walls, ceilings, windows and doors
  • Plumbing, fixtures and appliances
  • Electrical equipment
  • Garage
  • HVAC equipment
  • Attic

Some tips for maintaining these areas include:

  • Keep a working lightbulb in overhead lights in the hall and stairs
  • Check for signs of water damage
  • Maintain gutters, downspouts and roof
  • Install smoke alarms on every floor
  • Keep floors clear of electrical cords and clutter
  • Check for signs of rodents, bats, roaches and termites
  • Check attic for signs of roof leaks
  • Repair broken or cracked glass
  • Use mats with nonslip rubber backs on bathroom floors
  • Make sure water drains away from house
