It’s important to maintain a healthy and safe home in order to prevent illness and accidents. To do this, we must keep the home clean and dry, free of pests, well-ventilated, free from contaminants, safe and well-maintained.
This involves paying attention to all areas of the home, including:
- Yard and exterior
- Exterior roof, walls and windows
- Basement and crawlspace
- Interior walls, ceilings, windows and doors
- Plumbing, fixtures and appliances
- Electrical equipment
- Garage
- HVAC equipment
- Attic
Some tips for maintaining these areas include:
- Keep a working lightbulb in overhead lights in the hall and stairs
- Check for signs of water damage
- Maintain gutters, downspouts and roof
- Install smoke alarms on every floor
- Keep floors clear of electrical cords and clutter
- Check for signs of rodents, bats, roaches and termites
- Check attic for signs of roof leaks
- Repair broken or cracked glass
- Use mats with nonslip rubber backs on bathroom floors
- Make sure water drains away from house
- Fix loose or uneven steps and rails
